Paghimutad Negros Island extends our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Jose Jaime “Nonoy” Espina.
He was an inspiration to many local journalists not only for his wit and skill but also for the radical solidarity he showed toward people’s struggles, especially here in his hometown Negros Occidental.
Tito Nonoy, as he is fondly called, showed us that the role of a journalist goes beyond merely being a reporter of facts and events. Through his decades of practice, he showed us that the journalist must stand as one with the farmers, the workers, and other marginalized sectors in their fight toward a better society.
Despite the attacks he himself faced throughout the years, he continued to be a champion for press freedom and a supporter of alternative media. His life and career will be a never ending source of wisdom for us.
We shall celebrate his life by continuing to stand for the truth and serving the people.
